PREFACE.

THIS volume is a continuation of the series on all the prophets which was commenced in the autumn of the last year by the publication of "The Minor Prophets." The preface and general introduction to the prophetic books, prefixed to that volume, need not be repeated here, inasmuch as the greater part, at least, of the readers of this volume may be supposed to have access to that. This pursues the same general plan, aiming to be concise and yet lucid, and to bring out the true and precise sense of the original, with extended discussion only upon points of special interest and difficulty.

The reader will notice that Italics are used in the text, as in our English Bibles, to signify that there are no precisely corresponding words in the original Hebrew; but in the notes they are used for emphasis.

It is hoped that the remaining volumes on the prophets, viz., on Isaiah and on Jeremiah, will follow at no distant day.

OBERLIN, OHIO, July, 1867.
