PREFATORY NOTE

THE six lectures reprinted in this volume were delivered in the school of English Literature at Oxford on the invitation of Sir Walter Raleigh, in the Summer Term of 1921. Where it was necessary to curtail them I have restored them to their original form. But they were written as lectures, not as essays, and they contain digressions and repetitions which it was not possible to remove without completely recasting them.
