PÉNÉLOPE Quoique les princesses aient eu quelquefois de nombreux adorateurs, à cause de leur grande beauté et de leur vertu, aucune n'a jamais pu,'à cet égard, être mise en comparaison avec la chaste Pénélope, épouse d'Ulysse, et mère de Télémaque. L'absence d'Ulysse s'étant prolongée long-temps, par suite des aventures décrites dans l'Odyssée, sa mort s'accrédita à tel point, que cent seize prétendans à la main de Pénélope vinrent s'établir dans son palais, et y dissipaient les biens qui appartenaient à Ulysse et à Télémaque. La princesse, après avoir éludé long-temps de répondre à leurs vœux, crut avoir trouvé encore un prétexte pour les éloigner, en disant qu'elle donnerait sa main, à celui d'entre eux qui serait assez fort pour tendre l'arc d'Ulysse. L'instant choisi par l'artiste, pour le sujet de son bas-relief, est celui où la vertueuse princesse vient d'avoir cette heureuse idée. Cependant on voit la crainte qu'elle éprouve,en pensant qu'il se trouvera peut-être un homme doué d'une force semblable à celle de son mari, et qu'elle n'aura plus de motifs pour s'opposer au vainqueur. La composition de ce bas-relief est digne de la simplicité que l'on remarque dans les ouvrages des anciens, elle donne une haute idée du talent de Chantrey. Though princesses have sometimes had a great number of admirers on account of their great beauty and virtue, none could never be, in that respect, compared to the chaste Penelope, the wife of Ulysses and mother of Telemachus. The absence of Ulysses being prolonged for a while by a series of adventures described in the Odyssee, his death was so credited that a hundred and sixteen lovers who pretended to her hand came and settled in her palace, where they squandered away the wealth belonging to Ulysses and Telemachus. The princess after having avoided a long time answering to their vows, thought she had found a pretence to put them off, and gain time, in telling them that she would give her hand to him who was strong enough to bend the bow of Ulysses. The artist has chosen for the subject of his bas-relief the moment when this virtuous princess has conceived that happy idea. However, she shows how greatly she is afraid that some one may be found among them endowed with a like strength of her husband, and then, she should have no other motive to oppose the vanquisher. The composition of this bas-relief is worthy of the simplicity remarked in the works of the ancients and affords a high idea of Chantrey's talent. |
