DRAUGHT PLAYERS.

Draught-playing is greatly in use in every class of the society. The painter offers to view two neighbours diverting themselves at this play before their house, very likely after their dinner. He who has just won the game, expresses his joy in a most jovial manner and doubtless is the master of the house, having yielded to his guest the honour of the chair, he himself being seated on a bench; besides, a dog is placed near him, which denotes what a careful observer of nature the painter is.

The opponent seems to be quite thunderstruck at the unexpected push which makes him lose the game. The housewife holding a child in her arms beholds the game with great altention, the expression of her countenance shows how much concern she has for the player who has won. In her hand is a pot, which she is going to fill with beer, on purpose to divert a little the players from an object they seem to be so intent upon.

The composition of this picture is simple, the drawing correct, there is a variety of expression in it, and the clear-darkness is also extremely vigorous. Burnet the painter has engraven it himself in mezzo tinto.
