Let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness, &c.-Amos v. 4.

6. 21. 24.

When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.-Jonah ii. 7.

Let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God, &c. Who can tellif God will turn? &c. And they prevailed.—Jonah iii. 8-10.

Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, &c. it may be, ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger.Zeph. ii. 3.

As he cried, and they would not hear, so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts.-Zech. vii. 13. Prov. i. 24, 25. 28.

The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily (or continually be going) to pray before the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts: I will go also.--Zech. viii. 20. 21.

Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain: the Lord shall, &c. -Zech. x. 1.

I will pour upon the house of David, &c. the spirit of prayer and supplication.-Zech. xii. 10.

Pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.-Matt. v. 44.

When thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, &c. but thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet; and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father, &c. And when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking, &c. Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father, &c.-Matt. vi. 5-13. Luke xi. 1, &c.

Ask and it shall be given you: seek and ye shall find: knock and it shall be opened unto you; for every one that asketh, receiveth, &c. What

man is there of you, whom, if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? &c. If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven, give good things to them who ask him?-Matt. vii. 7 -11. Luke xi. 9-13.

Christ looking up to heaven, he blessed the bread and fishes, &c. He went up into a mountain apart to pray, &c. Peter said, Lord, save me. Matt. xiv. 19. 23. 30.

The woman of Canaan would not leave off asking till she had obtained. -Matt. xv. 22-28.

If two of you shall agree on earth, as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven, &c.— Matt. xviii. 19.

Ye know not what ye ask, said Christ unto the mother of Zebedee's children, &c. the two blind men would not cease crying till they were heard. -Matt. xx. 21, 22. 30-33.

All things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Mat. xxi. 22. Mark xi. 24. James i. 5—7.

Christ fell on his face and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, &c. watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation, &c. He prayed again and again, &c. He kneeled down and prayed.-Matt. xxvi. 39. 41, 42. 44. Luke vi. 12. xxii. 41. 46.

Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.-Luke x. 2.

And it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, &c.— Luke xi. 1, 2.

And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.-Luke xvii. 5.

And he spake a parable unto them, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; saying, There was in a city, a judge, &c. Shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, &c. I tell you

that he will avenge them.-Luke xviii. 1-8. xi. 3—8.

Beware of the scribes, &c. who for a show (or pretence) make long prayers. Luke xx. 46, 47.

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, &c.-Luke xxi. 36. Pray that ye enter not into temptation, &c. Rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.-Luke xxii. 40. 46. If thou knowest the gift of God, and who it is, &c. thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee. John iv. 10.

If any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth, &c.—John ix. 31.

Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.-John xiv. 13, 14.

If ye abide in me, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.-John xv. 7.

Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you: hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.-John xvi. 23, 24. 26.

These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.Acts i. 14. ii. 42.

The apostles and their company prayed with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, &c. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, &c.-Acts iv. 24. 29, 30.

We will give ourselves continually to prayer and, &c.-Acts vi. 4.

Pray God, if perhaps, the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee, for I perceive, &c. Simon said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken,

&c.—Acts viii. 22—24.

Inquire for one called Saul of Tarsus: for behold he prayeth, &c. Peter put them forth and kneeled down and prayed, and turning him, &c.-Acts ix. 11. 40.

Cornelius, a devout man, and one that feared, &c. and prayed to God alway, &c. Peter went up upon the house-top to pray about the sixth hour.-Acts x. 1, 2. 9. 30, 31.

Peter was in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.-Acts xii. 5.

And on the sabbath, we went out of the city by a river-side, where prayer was wont to be made, &c. And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel, &c.—Acts

xvi. 13. 16.

Paul, when he had thus spoken, kneeled down, and prayed with them all.-Acts xx. 36.

And we kneeled down on the shore and prayed.-Acts xxi. 5.

Even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance.-Acts xxii. 17.

I make mention of you always in my prayers, making request, If I might have a prosperous journey.Rom. i. 9, 10.

The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us, with groanings which cannot be uttered.-Rom. viii. 26.

The same Lord over all, is rich unto all that call upon him, &c. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved, &c. How then shall they call on him whom they have not believed?—Rom. x. 12—14. Continue instant in prayer.-Rom. xii. 12.

Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, &c. I beseech you, &c. that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me that I may be delivered, &c.-Rom. xv. 13. 30, 31.

With all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.-1 Cor. i. 2.

Every man praying, or prophesy- open unto us a door of utterance, &c. ing, having his head covered, disho- Labouring fervently for you in praynoureth his head; but every woman ers, that ye may stand perfect and that prayeth, &c. Judge in yourselves: complete in all the will of God.is it comely that a woman pray unto Col. iv. 2, 3. 12. 1 Pet. iv. 7. God uncovered?-1 Cor. xi. 4, 5.13. Let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue, pray that he may interpret, &c. I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also.-1 Cor. xiv. 13-15. Ye also helping together by prayer for us.-2 Cor. i. 11.

For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me: and he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee.-2 Cor. xii. 8, 9. Making mention of you in my prayers, That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him, &c.-Eph. i. 16, 17.

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus, &c. That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith, &c. Eph. iii. 14-17.

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance, and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may, &c.—Eph. vi. 18, 19.

Always in every prayer of mine for you all, making request, &c. And this I pray that your love may abound, &c.-Phil. i. 4. 9.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God, &c.- Phil. iv.6.

For this cause we also, &c. do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will, &c. Col. i. 9.

Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving, withal praying also for us, that God would

Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith: now God himself, and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you: and the Lord make you to increase, and abound in love.-1 Thess. iii. 10-12.

Pray without ceasing: and the very God of peace sanctify you wholly, &c. Brethren, pray for us.-1 Thess. v. 17. 23. 25.

We pray always for you, that our God would, &c. fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith.-2 Thess. i. 11.

Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God even our Father, which hath loved us, comfort your hearts, and establish you in every good word and work.-2 Thess. ii. 16, 17.

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course (or may run) and be glorified; and that we may be delivered, &c. And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, &c.-2Thess. iii. 1, 2.5.

Exhort therefore, that first of all supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men: for kings, and for all that are in authority (or eminent place), that we may lead a quiet, &c. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour. I will therefore, that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.-1 Tim. ii. 1-3. 8.

Every creature of God is good, &c. if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified by the word of God, and prayer.-1 Tim. iv. 5.

She that is a widow indeed, &c. and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.-1 Tim. v. 5.

I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day.-2 Tim. i. 3. Philem. 4.

Seeing then that we have a great them, &c. that your prayers be not hindered, &c. The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers.-1 Pet. iii. 7. 12.

High Priest that is passed into the heavens, Jesus, &c. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.-Heb. iv. 14. 16.

Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications, with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him. -Heb. v. 7.

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest, &c. and having an High Priest over the house of God; let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, &c. -Heb. x. 19-22. Eph. iii. 11, 12.

He who prays to God must believe that he is; and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Heb. xi. 6.

Pray for us, &c. Now the God of peace, &c. make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight. Heb. xiii. 18. 20, 21.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him: but let him ask in faith, nothing wavering; for he that wavereth, is like a wave of the sea, &c. and let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.-James i. 5-7.

Ye have not, because ye ask not; ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts (or pleasures).-James iv. 2, 3.

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray, &c. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, &c. and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, &c. Pray one for another: the effectual fervent prayer, &c.-James v.

13-16.

And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth, &c.-1 Pet. i. 17.

Likewise ye husbands dwell with

Be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.-1 Pet. iv. 7.

Whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.-1 John iii. 22.

This is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. If any man see his brother sin a sin not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death, I do not say that he shall pray for it.-1 John v. 14-16.

Praying in the Holy Ghost.Jude 20.

The elders, &c. having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours (or incense) which are the prayers of the saints.—Rev. v. 8.

Another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer, and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with (or add it to) the prayers of all saints, &c. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.-Rev. viii. 3, 4.

SECT VII. To take special notice of
the acts of God's Goodness and
Mercy, keep Memorials thereof,
celebrate his Praises, extol him, and
stir up others so to do.
ABRAHAM's servant, when God had
heard his request, bowed down his
head and worshipped the Lord. And
he said, Blessed be the Lord God of
my master Abraham, who hath not
left destitute my master of his mercy
and his truth, &c. When he heard
their words, he worshipped the Lord,
&c.-Gen. xxiv. 26, 27. 52.

I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God; and thou wast pleased with me.-Gen. xxxiii. 10. Then Jacob said, &c. Let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went, &c. And he built there an altar, and called the place El-bethel, because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother. -Gen. xxxv. 2, 3. 7. 14, 15. xxviii. 18, &c.

God commanded Israel to commemorate their deliverance from Egypt once in every year.-Exod. xiii. 3, &c. Moses and Israel solemnly celebrated his praise for their deliverance at the Red Sea, in a song of praise. -Exod. xv. 2-22.

When Israel got the victory over the Amalekites, he built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi; that is, the Lord my banner.-Exod. xvii. 13-15.

And Moses told unto Jethro his father-in-law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh, and to the Egyptian's for Israel's sake, &c. And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the Lord had done unto Israel, &c. and said, Blessed be the Lord who hath delivered you, &c. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods. -Exod. xviii. 8-11.

When thou hast eaten, and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.-Deut. viii. 10.

Israel is commanded especially to remember their deliverance out of Egypt.-Deut. xxvi. 1, &c. Exod. xiii. 14, 15.

Moses's song, setting forth God's mercy. Deut. xxxii.

Joshua pitched stones in Gilgal, in memory of Israel's passing drythrough Jordan; that all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty.-Josh. iv. 5-7.20-24.

The song of Deborah and Barak,

which they sang after the victory over Sisera and his army.--Judges v. 2 Chron. xx. 26. Ps. cxxiv. 1-7.

Hannah sung praise, when she brought Samuel her son to the house of the Lord, whom the Lord had given her upon her prayer.-1 Sam.ii. 1-11.

When the Philistines were beaten, Samuel set up a stone; and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.-1 Sam. vii. 10–12.

When Abigail met David, and prevented him in his hasty purpose concerning Nabal's house, he said unto Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me; and blessed be thy advice, &c. And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil, &c.-1 Sam. xxv. 32, 33. 39.

When God had promised many great blessings unto David, he saith, Let thy name be magnified for ever; saying, The Lord of hosts is the God over Israel, &c.—2 Sam. vii. 26.

And David spake unto the Lord the words of this song, in the day that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: and he said, The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.-2 Sam. xxii. 1, 2.

Blessed be the Lord, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he hath promised. -1 Kings viii. 56.

Upon the return of the ark to the city of David, he prepares a song, and delivers it to be sung by way of thanksgiving unto God.-1 Chron. xvi. 8-37.

When the people had offered willingly towards the building of the house of the Lord, David blessed the Lord before all the congregation; and David said, Blessed be thou, O Lord God of Israel, our Father, for ever and ever, &c. Now therefore our God, we thank thee, and praise thy
